We’re currently painting the inside of our house and have just completed our living room, pictured here. The white walls are the perfect neutral backdrop to display my collection of colourful and quirky decorations – how cute is that little horse pinata?

I love making my own crafts and homeware and had so much fun making these cheeky pom poms to decorate the unconventional cactus tree. No colour is off-limits in my home, but I did try to work from a base of dusty pink for my non-traditional ‘festive fiesta’ vibe.

Tree: As you can probably tell, I’m not a ‘traditional Christmas tree’ type of person so I fell in love with this 1.8m cactus from Superette. It comes flat-packed so you can easily store it away after Christmas, or just remove the decorations and keep it up all year round.

Decorations: I’m obsessed with pom poms at the moment. I think they are a gorgeous decoration which can be tied in to any colour scheme. There are plenty of tutorials online showing how to make pom poms and they are surprisingly easy.

Presents: I love the wrapping paper that Evie Kemp has designed to go with this issue. It’s colourful and fun – and did I mention it looks cool decorated with mini pom poms?

On wall: Ahoy Trader cross, $169unique wedding gifts couple, from Superette; Indiana wall hanging, $179, from Shut The Front Door. Walls painted in Dulux ‘Okarito’. On floor and cacti: Large wooden cactus, $429, round wooden cactus, $199, both from Superette; wool for pom poms, from $5 a ball, pom pom fringe, $6.59 a metre, horse pinata, $26.99, all from Spotlight; Eddie orange cushion, $139, Moroccan pink cushion, $99, both from Republic; jute braided round rug, $719, from Father Rabbit; Missoni Montgomery throw, $563, from Tessuti.

All other items, Shani’s own: gold cushion made from fabric from The Hospice Shop; pink slippers from The Salvation Army; pink shelves a gift, painted in Dulux ‘Titahi Bay’; plant from Roger’s Nursery; terracotta pot from Bunnings.

Decorating your new home, giving your bedroom a makeover, or setting up a child’s room or nursery can be fun and exciting! Unfortunately sometimes it can also be frustrating and overwhelming, especially if you are unable to find specific pieces that fit your theme! That is one reason why DIY home decor is such a great way to go- you can totally customize your pieces in any way you want and even add in things that make it sentimental to you! Marie Nicole decorated these chipboard letters in a vintage aviation theme to fit her son’s room. Using some of our papers, paints, a few items she had on hand, and even adding in her son’s aviation cap really brought these letters to life!?
